Bali is a province of Indonesia located in the western part of the Nusa Tenggara Islands, east of the island of Java, and its capital is Denpasar. The largest island in the province, Bali has several nicknames, including “Island of the Gods” and “Island of a Thousand Temples.”[9] In 2020, the population of Bali province was 4,317,404, with a density of 747 people per square kilometer. By the end of 2024, the population had reached 4,375,263.[4][5][10]
At the beginning of Indonesian independence, the island was part of the Lesser Sunda Islands Province, with its capital in Singaraja. It is now divided into three provinces: Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and East Nusa Tenggara.[11][12]
In addition to Bali, the province also includes the smaller surrounding islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Ceningan, Serangan Island, and Menjangan Island. Geographically, Bali is located between the islands of Java and Lombok. The majority of Balinese people are Hindu.[10] Bali is renowned internationally as a tourist destination for its unique arts and culture, as well as its myths, especially among Japanese and Australian tourists. Bali is also known as the Island of the Gods and the Island of a Thousand Temples.
